Our Academy is recognized as amongst the very best martial art schools in Northern NSW. We have such a great group of dedicated Karatekas and our standard is sincerely excellent.

Byron Shire Kase-Ha Shotokan Karate & Self Defence is a passionate martial arts academy active in and around Byron Bay in the NSW Northern Rivers of Australia. With eight weekly classes in Bangalow and one on one sessions all over the Northern Rivers, covering all skill levels from beginners to advanced, our Academy offers an atmosphere of both intense training and camaraderie under the expert tutelage of Chief Instructor Sensei Jean Boussard 4th Dan Kase-Ha Shotokan with over 50 years martial arts experience, and of Instructors Senseis Ben Ruble 3rd Dan Kase-Ha Shotokan and Fabio Quijano 2nd Dan Shotokan, assisted by some very good Karatekas: Sempais Stephen Lawrence (1st Dan), Pierre Albertini (1st Dan), Damien O’Meara (1st Kyu).

Each class is led in a safe and friendly environment by a fully qualified Karate Instructor,  and encompasses Kihon (techniques without partner), Kata (choreographed sequence of techniques against multiple attackers) and Kumite (sparring exercises), with meditation/ stretching / warm up / conditioning exercises.

We teach and practice traditional Shotokan Karate under the legacy of Frank Nowak Sensei and Hirokazu Kanazawa Sensei. Advanced classes incorporate the realistic training in Practical Self Defence of the Kase-Ha Way as developed by the late Taji Kase Sensei.

We are affiliated with Kase-Ha Shotokan Karate Australia  (KSKA) under the guidance of our Chief Instructor Arie Farcas Sensei (7th Dan) and our Australian Shihankai Senseis Mark Smith, Terry Raftry and Mark Johnson, all 6th Dan. Our tuition and Diplomas are officially recognized.
